Modelling the exceptional Baltic Sea inflow events in 2002–2003

چکیده
[1] During 2002 and 2003 exceptional inflow events have been registered. In January 2003 a massive inflow of highly saline, cold and extremely oxygen-rich water from the North Sea was recorded at Darss Sill. This event is considered to be the most important inflow since 1993. A coupled model system for the Baltic Sea region, called BALTIMOS, was developed in the frame of DEKLIM/ BALTEX by linking existing model components for the atmosphere (model REMO), for the ocean including sea ice (model BSIOM), for the hydrology (model LARSIM) as well as for lakes. The model system consists of high resolution model components: 1/6 ( 18 km) with 20 vertical levels; ocean-ice 5 km with 60 vertical levels, hydrology 1/6 . The model domain covers the whole drainage basin of the Baltic Sea as well as major parts of Europe. The exceptional inflow events have been simulated successfully with BALTIMOS. The simulation was initialized at 1st of February 2002 and the model has been run until October 2003. This period includes the exceptional warm water inflow in autumn 2002 and the major Baltic inflow in January 2003. Different inflow characteristics are presented and discussed. The simulated volume transport for the major inflow in January 2003 amounts to about 250 km, half of which was of salinity 17 PSU which corresponds to a salt transport of 2.7 10 kg.

Rapid re-oxygenation of Baltic Sea sediments following a large inflow event.
The Baltic Sea is the second largest (373 000 km) brackish water system in the world and experiences long periods of anoxia and hypoxia (\2 ml l) below the halocline at approximately 80 m depth. This ‘dead zone’ could have a below-halocline extension of 70 000 km (2011), which is similar to the area of Scotland. Although the Baltic Sea has had periods of low oxygen in historical times (Zillén e...

In January 2003, a major inflow of cold and oxygen-rich North Sea Water terminated an ongoing stagnation period in parts of the central Baltic Sea. In order to investigate the role of North Sea Water inflow in the production of nitrous oxide (N2O), we measured dissolved and atmospheric N2O at 26 stations in the southern and central Baltic Sea in October 2003. At the time of our cruise, water re...

We review progress in Baltic Sea physical oceanography (including sea ice and atmosphere–land interactions) and Baltic Sea modelling, focusing on research related to BALTEX Phase II and other relevant work during the 2003–2014 period. The major advances achieved in this period are: Meteorological databases are now available to the research community, partly as station data, with a growing numbe...
متن کاملCyanobacteria blooms in the Gulf of Finland triggered by saltwater inflow into the Baltic Sea
In the 1980s and 1990s prior to 1995, massive blooms of the diazotrophic cyanobacterium Nodularia spumigena occurred in the Baltic Sea Proper but never extended into the central and eastern Gulf of Finland. The absence of nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria blooms in parts of the Baltic Sea with a high N:P ratio (e.g. Gulf of Finland) has been explained by their reduced competitive advantage in condi...

The modern Baltic Sea is the world’s largest anthropogenically forced anoxic basin. Using integrated geochemical records collected during Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Expedition 347 from the deepest and one of the most reducing sub-basins in the Baltic Sea, Landsort Deep, we explore the degree and frequency of natural anoxia through the Baltic Holocene. A marked decrease in carbon-t...
